Nosework (Scentwork)
Nosework is a dog sport created to mimic professional detection dog tasks. One dog and one
handler form a team. The dogs must find a hidden target odor, often ignoring distractors, and
alert the handler. After the dog finds the odor they are rewarded with food or a toy and praise.
This is a positive, challenging activity that allows dogs the opportunity to use their strongest
natural sense in a way that’s fun, engaging, and that builds and strengthens a foundation of
trust between the handler and dog.
The benefits of Nosework include
ï‚· -Dogs easily burn off mental & physical energy doing searches
ï‚· -Provides much needed enrichment for any dog
ï‚· -Nosework builds your dog’s confidence
ï‚· -Searches can be done anywhere you can take your dog such as a park, etc.
ï‚· -Shy or fearful dogs build confidence and overactive dogs put their energy into fun
searches
ï‚· -Build a stronger bond between dog & handler as handlers learn to observe,
understand, and rely upon their dogs
ï‚· -Learn a great activity for rainy and cold days to relieve your dog of excess energy
ï‚· -Mental enrichment helps to prevent and resolve behavioral problems
